Foto Mottok 02 Alexander Mottok studied choir and orchestra conducting with Erich Waechter, Thomas Lang, Gerd Mueller-Lorenz as well as chamber music with Larry Dalton (Tulsa, OK) and violin performance and teaching with Christiane Edinger at the Music Academy of Luebeck, Germany. While still studying at the academy he founded the “Collegium Musicum Luebeck“, an orchestra which he has been leading both as concert master and as conductor. The Collegium has since evolved into being a cornerstone of north Germany’s musical culture, having participated in countless oratorio projects as well as in symphonic concerts and recordings.

Since his debut in 1996, Mottok has been working as a freelance conductor, putting special focus on contemporary music. As an assistant and guest conductor, he has worked with several choirs and orchestras from the broader region, as well as with the orchestra of the University of Virgina’s College at Wise (USA).

Since 2007 he has been directing musical productions at the Musical Theatre of Bremen, generally involving a large orchestra, such as “La Cage aux Folles” by Jerry Herman, and also a series of symphonic shows with Circus Roncalli, one of Germany’s leading circus companies.Stuttgart 2013

From 2002 until 2006 he directed the “Gateway Symphony Orchestra“ in a series of recordings for EMI classics (“Edition New Wagner“). With the same ensemble, he also directed a number of live shows involving artists from other non-classical genres (such as Jazz singer Ken Norris, Flamenco guitarist Gerardo Núñez and Flamenco dancer Carmen Cortés). On the classical stage, he has conducted concerts with soloists such as Christiane Edinger, James Tocco and Veronika Eberle.

Besides his conducting work, he is still an active violinist, having performed internationally with different chamber music ensembles (such as the Crystal Palace Quartet from London, for which he also works as an arranger) and as violin soloist in countries like France, Denmark and the USA.

Mottok has also been a very active composer, his latest works include “33 sound-pictures to paintings by Christa Donatius”, his orchestral “Impressions”, which were commissioned by “German Doctors” and premiered in 2013, as well as countless orchestral encores.

At the age of 26, he was appointed conductor and musical director of the Chamber Orchestra of Stade, a community symphony orchestra in the north of Germany. In 2000, he was first hired by the German Medical Doctors’ Orchestra to assist its founder, Dr. Dieter Poeller, in rehearsal and concert work, upon Poeller’s resignation in 2004 he was appointed his successor, a position that he is still holding today.

In 2007 the “German Medical Doctors’ Choir” was founded under his direction, which has since then become an independent organization, in which he still serves as conductor and musical director. Under his direction, the Medical Doctors’ Choir and Orchestra have performed a great number of the big symphonic oratorios at locations all across the country.
